The Earth Center publishes both books and periodicals providing information and
advocacy for the Kemetic culture and tradition. Our two main periodical
publications are the monthly SunnySide (formerly the Chicago
SunnySide) newspaper and the quarterly Rising Firefly magazine. The
Earth Center also publishes books in English authored by Master Naba Lamousa
Morodenibig.
The monthly
Sunnyside newspaper contains articles written by the
initiates of the M'Tam School of Kemetic Philosophy and Spirituality. It also
contains monthly earth energy readings by the students. The
Sunnyside is
currently a free newspaper that is partially supported by ad sales. It
concentrates primarily on news, current events and culture.
The Rising Firefly is a Kemetic journal of culture, philosophy and
spirituality. Our purpose is to promote diversity and awareness. We aim to
strengthen education, spirituality, culture and unity among all people. We
strive to bring people of different backgrounds, education, race and culture to
learn from and grow with one another. The Rising Firefly is coming from the
perspective of the Kemetic Civilization, as the African continent is the cradle
of all civilizations. We believe that by going back to the origins of
civilization, we will bring unity among people. It is about time we look for
the unity of all humankind.
History
The Rising Firefly is an international publication that has been in publication
since 1996. The Rising Firefly began as Bayuali, a publication of The Earth
Center. Bayuali was a purely spiritual publication and offered articles on
Kemetic spirituality and five earth energy (Bayuali) readings each month. Naba
Lamoussa Morodenibig, a Dogon Traditional
Priest from Burkina Faso, wrote and published the entire magazine and was
assisted by Rachel Fall in the layout. Bayuali was published in Iowa, USA and
was distributed in New Age and Cultural bookstores and shops across the United
States, and was also published in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
The format of Bayuali Magazine was drastically changed in 1999. Bayuali
Magazine became Choices Magazine and was distributed free of charge locally in
Iowa City, Iowa. Choices Magazine featured one monthly earth energy (Bayuali)
reading, along with many of the columns that continue in the magazine's present
form, such as Philosophy Podium and Earth Talk. Choices Magazine also featured
a Kids Page, poetry and other articles. Naba wrote many of the articles
featured in Choices Magazine, including the Earth energy readings, while other
writers contributed articles on diverse topics. The sole Staff columnist was
Rachel Fall; other authors contributed to the magazine on a submission basis.
Rachel Fall was the graphic designer.
Because of the popularity of Choices Magazine and our desire to reach a
broader, more ethnic audience, Choices Magazine relocated to Chicago, IL, USA.
In Chicago, Choices Magazine became The Chicago Firefly, and the format of the
publication changed again. The Chicago Firefly was a bigger in size and in
quantity, and the contributing writers wrote more professionally. The Chicago
Firefly was distributed free of charge in Chicago and the surrounding areas and
developed a huge audience that anxiously awaited each issue. Naba continued
with his columns, and Rachel Fall continued with the design and layout. Staff
columnists included: Rachel Fall, Latranei Gaibole, Robert "Baabe" Irving III,
and Cortney Scott. Other articles and features published in The Chicago Firefly
were on a submission basis. At this time, The Chicago Firefly developed a
website.
A few years later, due to financial concerns, The Chicago Firefly became The
Rising Firefly, and distribution increased to New York and California. The
Rising Firefly was published bimonthly.
Recently, The Rising Firefly has undergone changes yet again, and it will no
longer be a free publication. Due to an unfortunate lack of financial support,
The Rising Firefly ceased to be a free publication and became a for-sale
magazine. At this time, The Rising Firefly expanded its distribution even
farther, and is now found in many states nationwide as well as internationally.
Other major changes in The Rising Firefly included an expansion of pages, more
columns, three earth energy readings (bayuali) in each issue instead of just
one, mini-readings for each dekan, and more professionally written articles,
columns and features. The Rising Firefly is also printed on better quality
paper, with a white text and a glossy, full color cover. Staff columnists
include: Naba Lamoussa Morodenibig, Rachel Fall, Robert "Baabe" Irving III,
Latranei Gaibole, Cortney Scott and the elder students of the M'TAM School of
Spiritualty; other articles and features are published by submissions. Regular
columns include:
-
The Pilgrim's Walking Stick: A column By Master Naba
that focuses on Kemetic Philosophical commentary on the nature of colonial
society.
-
The Initiate: A column written by initiates for
initiates and potential initiates that concentrates on the lessons learned
during the process of re-patriation to Kemetic Society and Culture.
-
Philosophy Podium: A regular column by Master Naba
that presents Kemetic Philosophy and knowledge for readers in and outside of
colonial society.
In Search of the Gods: A column by Bikbaye Inejnema
geared towards enlightening readers on the different spiritual practices of
diverse cultures and their concepts of God and methods of acknowledging their
respective deities.
-
Root Tones: A column by Robert "Baabe" Irving
III that illuminates the history, spirituality and tradition of music from
the Kemetic perspective.
-
Ka'at Ib: A column by inititates of the Ka'at Ib
training in the M'Tam school.
